The selection and grading of timber
Vehanen’s log homes are built from carefully selected pine logs. Special quality requirements have been established for the timber with respect to length, crown dimensions, knotting and warping. Decay, blue brittleness and wormholes are not permitted at all. The timber is graded in connection with felling, and the sorting of logs continues before sawing. An effective irrigation system ensures that the logs do not become blue and brittle during storage.

Debarking and sawing
The graded logs go to the debarking plant according to the sawing programme. We use the bark in our own heat centre to produce the heat for drying the sawn timber. Along the debarking line, logs proceed through a metal detector to the gang saws. After going through these, timber becomes sawn wood: logs, planks and boards. The sawn wood is graded on the sorting table as well as during the entire period of the log home production.

Drying
After sawing, the timber is transported to the drying house. Under strict supervision at the timber drying house, we dry the wood material to the desired/appropriate degree of dryness. The drying process is monitored by means of a computer during the complete drying period.

The planing mill
The dried timber is placed in intermediate storage, from which it is then moved to the planing mill. In the modern planing mill, the dried timber is further processed to various dimensions under strict quality supervision. The planing mill building also hosts a packing division, where the various partial deliveries of wood are carefully packed.

Design and drawing
Before the actual building of the log home, a great deal of work has gone on with the client in our design department at the house-building plant, where the log home is planned and drawn to meet the customer’ wishes. The log house-building images, including the wall line, electrical and other required pictures and drawings, etc., go from the design department to building production. The main drawings needed to obtain a building permit in Finland are also part of the log home package.

House-building plant
Log homes are made at the house-building plant in accordance with clients’ orders, one house at a time. The house-building plant boasts several production lines, so production capacity is available. When completed, the log framework is packed carefully for transport, whether it’s going abroad or to a destination within Finland.

Delivery
The logs are ready-numbered and the client receives the wall line pictures and directions for construction as well as general and maintenance instructions. In addition to the log framework, the doors, windows and indoor stairs, the floor, ceiling, cover and terrace boards, as well as the sauna benches and supports for the roof, framing of the joists and base floor are delivered, carefully packaged, to the client. We know that when building, the delivery schedule is very important. We make sure that delivery takes place at the time agreed.
